You can’t escape it. No matter how hard you try, you will at some point you are going to encounter Christmas music. By now, it’s everywhere. The music ranges from the sublime to the popular to the truly bizarre. No other season has a soundtrack like Christmas.
Music is a powerful thing. There is little else that we experience that can weave a story, bring out emotions and stick with us like music. Music helps us remember, and for an advent people, remembering is paramount.
The lyrics of the Advent hymns and Christmas songs tell the story of waiting for the savior. Of the longing of the advent people. These songs remind us of the promises that were to come, the faithfulness of God and peace that is to come. They express our desires for a world gone wrong to be set right and unify our voices as we call out to God in prayers set to song. So together we sing:
Come, Thou long expected Jesus
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.
VERSE: Psalm 96:1-3
Sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing to the Lord, praise his name;
proclaim his salvation day after day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
Prayer: O God of song, tune our hearts to sing of your grace. Hear our prayers as we join together, raising voices in expectation of the promises of Christ who has come and will come again. We give you thanks for the gift of music, for the way it reminds us of your promises and connects us to you in mind, body and soul.
