The fourth candle of advent is the candle of love. In the scriptures, we are told of four different kinds of love. Three of these kinds are a reciprocal kind of love, meaning that they only truly work as an exchange. Consider the love between husband and wife, between best friends and family. These types of love are based on the relationships between people.

The final kind of love has no restrictions, and in fact, cannot be reciprocated. This is the Agape kind. This is the love that compelled God to create, and then to give the gift of His only son. This is the kind of love that let Jesus endure the cross. This kind of love cannot be repaid and can only be accepted. It therefore, is the perfect gift.

1 John 4:16 We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.

Prayer: O God of love, of all the things for which you are known, we give thanks that your love is the best. We give thanks that it is love that holds all things together and binds us to you. Help us to love ourselves, our neighbors, our enemies and you. Let us be known for love and spread that love this advent season.
