When advent ends, we are left with a baby. Given the gift of hindsight and knowing much more of the story, we can see more completely the pieces of the puzzle. For the advent people at the time, they only had what we get with every new baby - innocence and potential.
Babies are the ultimate emblem of innocence. Is there anything more innocent than a baby? Nope. When we look at babies, we see in them a purity that hasn’t been stained yet by the world. We see someone who hasn’t had dreams dashed or spirit crushed. Our savior coming as a baby reminds us of the hope that we all once had and the potential found therein.
Here’s the thing, though. We can have that innocence again. With a life in Christ we can experience the innocence that he carried throughout his life. We are given the chance at new life with Christ and forgiveness through his sacrifice. And with God, who can use all things for good, we have the potential to change the world according to his good and perfect will.
VERSE: 1 John 3:1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
Prayer: O God of the babies, we confess our shortcomings to you and pray for a return to innocence. Grant to us once again the hope and potential that comes from being free from the stains of sin and disappointment. Make us once again like a baby - pure, innocent and full of potential.
